How to get flat walls for your tile. I also talk about the difference between a traditional shower system with a referred to as a "water in, water out System" built with vinyl liner three piece drain and cement board, compared a modern "Sealed System" that is built using a Bonding Flange Drain and waterproof Foam Boards.
Having a flat substrate to install your tile to will make the job go faster and give you a better outcome. It is rare to find wall studs that are perfectly aligned and in plane, if you don't shim, fur, sister, or make adjustments and install your Durock, or other wall board directly to the studs, you will end up with a wavy wall with humps and valleys. If you are using a foam board like Schluter Kerdi-Board, there is a quick and easy method to flattening a wa with little effort and no shimming. Schluter allows wetshimming, this will also work for other Foam boards,, however I am not sure whether they approve of it or not, so please check before proceeding. This method is called wet shimming and is the application of a thick bed of adhesive to the studs to compensate for the differences in alignment, then the board is attached to the studs and adjusted to achieve a flat plumb wall.All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area.
