Faulty neuroception has you missing your body’s somatic cues #nervoussystemregulation
Anxiety isn’t bad. It’s communication. It’s your brain and body saying, “Hey! I detect a threat!” This threat can be very real or imagined, either way your body is listening and alerting you to any potential threats.
This very intelligent messaging system and threat assessment radar between your body and your brain can sometimes get lost in translation.
Literally.
😟 You interpret unsafe people as safe
😣 and safe people as dangerous.
How does this happen?
It may be a byproduct of a childhood or significant adult relationship where you had to rely on an unsafe person to get your needs met and to survive.
👉🏾 Coined by Stephen Porges, NEUROCEPTION describes the ongoing process of evaluating information coming in from our senses to determine what’s happening in our bodies and whether or not a situation is safe, threatening, or dangerous.
Neuroception takes place in the primitive parts of the brain, beyond our conscious awareness. It’s affected by our relationships, life experiences, mood, and exposure to substances.
⚠️ WHAT MAKES IT WORSE:
• Codependency, dissociation, self-disconnection
• Any tendency to leave one own’s body, distrust one’s senses, and doubt what you feel, sense, or know
• Trauma bonded relationships (a trauma bond is not love. Chemically, it operates like an addiction, leaving you in inner turmoil and ungrounded)
• Numbing behaviors and substances
• People-pleasing, chronic stress, and nervous system dysregulation
🤯 BIG AHA: When we’ve been trained to self-abandon, it’s natural to perceive yourself as the cause of every problem. When you couple faulty neuroception with self-blaming behavior and thoughts, you can get lost in the idea that you’re the problem and not the environment.
✅ WHAT MAKES IT BETTER:
• Any practice that invites you to come back to yourself (meditation, yoga, mindfulness, mindful movement, somatic healing, conscious intimacy)
• Sensing, intentionally. Slowly. Deliberately.
