Software Engineering or Machine Learning: What's a better career?

I am a data professional, and today I'd like to answer the question that I often get asked: "What's a better career choice: Software Engineering or Machine Learning"

We're going to take into account:
-salaries and job openings growth in the United States and United Kingdom
-barriers to entry (do you need a specialised degree like PhD?)
-your predispositions
-predictions for the next 10 years

I believe that the most important factor in deciding whether you should pursue machine learning or software engineering are *your predispositions* - your talents, skills and natural abilities! At the end of the day, machine learning and software engineering are completely different fields, so the nature of work is totally different. It's better to specialise in the field that you're naturally more suited to do, because then you learn faster!
