Jacques hail from the island of Guadeloupe and his exposure and first instrument he played was the Gwoke Drums. His Afro-Caribbean and Jewish roots by way of his parents(dad is from France and mom is from Guadeloupe) has helped him incorporate his ethnic roots in his music. While attending the School of Government in his country, Jacques graduated and became a attorney. But it wasn't until he was working as a Senator's Assistant at the age of 24 when he began playing the saxophone. He applied to the Berklee School of Music here he eventually moved to Boston to study music. While there some of his classmates were Ruben Rogers, Teodross Avery Darren Barrett, and Charles Craig.
After graduating he moved to New York City where he became a staple on the jazz scene playing with the likes of Chucho Valdez, Danilo Perez, Etienne Charles, Meshell N'Degeocello. Jacques would become part of the famous Soulquarians collective featuring Roy Hargrove, Pino Palladino, Bilal, James Poyser, Questlove, D'Angelo,, J Dilla, and Erykah Badu. He was on the iconic D"Angelo album "Voodoo" and was part of the touring band. This band was the nucleus of trumpeter Roy Hargrove would eventually morph into the RH Factor.
Recently Jacques performed music from his new album "The Harlem Suite" at the famed Jazz Gallery in New York City. The latest Ropeadope Records release is his tribute to Harlem, New York where he lived for almost 20 years. We sat down to talk about his deep island roots, both he and former RH Factor band member Ray Angry reflect on the legacy of the Soulquarians and Roy Hargrove, as well as talk about his days in Boston.
