Food Deserts and Unicorns are the same thing | Dr. Latame Phillips | TEDxBotham Jean Blvd

This talk challenges the idea that unicorns and food deserts are the same. Unicorns, often featured in children's stories and adult sci-fi movies, symbolize the mythical power of this fantastical creature. A desert, on the other hand, is a natural geographic feature characterized by a dry climate with minimal rainfall, despite efforts to irrigate and develop the region. In contrast, a 'food desert' is a human-made issue stemming from historical racism and economic policies designed to limit access to essential resources for people of color. Latame Phillips was born in San Diego, CA attended the University of Southern California in Los Angeles receiving a degree in Business Management. Phillips then served his country in the United States Army fighting in Operation Enduring Iraqi Freedom. After his term of service was complete, Phillips worked in in management roles for several large companies. He soon realized that corporate life was not for him and started a nonprofit. He is now the CEO at Hunger Busters specializes in serving children the third meal of the day. Latame's work has been recognized by the city and national level as the 145th day of the year is now 'Hunger Busters Day' in Dallas and he also recieved the 44th Presidental Community Service Award.
