taiwan confirms 1.199 local covid cases

taiwan announced 1.199 local covid-19 infections
and 152 imported cases on saturday april 16th
while the dead tally remained unchanged at 854
a total of 672 cases were asymptomatic
of the 7.752 local covid cases recorded in 2022
7.713 had no or mild symptoms, 36 had moderate
symptoms and 3 experienced severe symptoms
the latest severe case reported on
saturday is 2 years old and being treated
the new imported cases include
66 males and 86 females
they include four arrivals from vietnam,
three from south korea, two each
from indonesia and thailand,
one each from singapore and the us
and 139 still under investigation
taiwan schedules referendum
to lower voting age to 18.
a referendum about lowering the voting age
to 18 will take place on november 26th,
the same day as local elections
according to the constitution, the measure
will need to support of at least half
of all eligible voters casting
a ballot in the referendum
a minimum of 9.65 million will need to
come out and vote in favor on november 26th
some believe the target will be easier to reach
if the referendum is held on the
same day as elections for mayors,
county commissioners, city and county
councillors and other local officials
social activists and students have
spent years campaigning for the change
to bring taiwan's voting age in
line with most other democracies
ngos call for outright ban on
giving away animals in taiwan
the practice of using live animals as prizes at
night markets and other occasions must be outlawed
taiwan's animal welfare groups
urge on friday april the 15th
guinea pigs, goldfish, rabbits, birds, reptiles,
sugar gliders and other animals
are often given away as prizes
at recreational venues outdoor fairs
marketplaces and night market playgrounds
this is concerning as the animals
are sometimes treated inhumanely
also, many of the prize winners are
incapable of caring for the creatures
or simply growing tired of keeping the trophies
the animal protection act bans the award
of animals for gambling or dubious purposes
but games such as 'goldfish scooping' are
considered entertainment and not bound by law
legislators Tsai Pi-ru (蔡壁如)
of the taiwan people's party
and Chen Jiau-hua (陳淑華) of the new power party
promised efforts to introduce regulatory changes
as taiwan strives to become
an animal friendly country
a dedicated pet division was established
under the auspices of the council
of agriculture earlier this month
which will oversee the implementation
of animal welfare policies
taiwan's tunghai university to
accommodate 18 ukrainian students
tunghai university in central
taiwan said on saturday
it will accommodate 18 ukrainian students
from late april to show its support for
the country amid the russia - ukraine war
the university said it had originally
planned to support 10 ukrainian students
to study and live in taiwan for four years
however, since more than 30
students have expressed interest,
the school decided to admit 18 students first
with its president Chang Kuo-en (張國恩)
pledging to help them as much as possible
among the first batch of students,
11 will seek bachelor's degree,
six masters and one doctorate, the school said
adding that the doctorate student who
speaks fluent chinese may study politics
except for that student, the others will receive
mandarin training before enrolling in departments
such as foreign languages, finance
and business administration
the 18 students are currently in warsaw poland
and they could arrive in taiwan as
early as late april, the school said
