"Rosalina in the Observatory" (Super Mario Galaxy) LIVE Jazz Cover // J-MUSIC Pocket Band

Our live cover of "Rosalina in the Observatory (or Comet Observatory)" from Super Mario Galaxy, originally composed by Koji Kondo. This arrangement by Patrick Bartley. Recorded live at Black Cat LES in New York City on March 1, 2020.

Now, this one is for the real jazz fans... I'm sure most of you are familiar with the wonderful "8-Bit Big Band", right? Well Charlie is actually a good friend of ours (a few members of J-MUSIC have played in his projects numerous times throughout the past two years), and I (Pat) took inspiration to do this song after hearing (and performing) the beautiful and grandiose 8-Bit arrangement. It seems that Charlie and I both had the same idea when hearing this song for the first time - Miles Davis, "Someday My Prince Will Come". Since there was no way we could match the power of a full big band, we decided to go in a slightly different direction, tweaked and mellowed out for a jazz sextet. We threw in tinges of Cannonball Adderley, with a slightly faster tempo and some "modern jazz reharms" thrown in for some extra kick. Go check out their version, as well, to hear our friend Mark Dover shred some clarinet!

Being that this is the music for Super Mario Galaxy's hub world, we thought it fitting as a metaphor to have so many different musical possibilities to travel to, with this song. This is definitely one of our favorite arrangements, and we'll be playing this one again for sure. Thanks for listening, and we hope you enjoy!
