Are Hands Hits in Sword Sparring REALLY No Big Deal?

I've often seen people dismiss light cuts to the hands in sparring, claiming that they wouldn't do much in a real (unarmored) fight. They seem to underestimate just how fragile the human body is, and especially its appendages. :)
