In the Studio | Intuitive Abstract Textile Art with Fabric Scraps (Part 1)
Join me in the studio as I create intuitive abstract textile compositions from fabric scraps, using appliqué, boro stitching, and hand quilting to turn scraps into art. Perfect for inspiration, slow stitching, and breaking through creative block.
In this studio session, I take you behind the scenes of my process for creating intuitive abstract textile compositions using fabric scraps. Working quickly with pre-cut squares and offcuts, I show how I use raw edge appliqué, needle turn appliqué, boro-style mending, and hand quilting to build three unique but connected fabric artworks.
This approach is the same technique I teach in my Abstract Mini Quilts downloadable workshop (available on my website), only here I scale it up to a larger composition. My aim was to shift out of a creative block and low mood by working instinctively with colour, shape, and texture—letting the fabric guide the process.
You’ll learn:
How to compose a balanced textile artwork using scraps
Simple appliqué methods (raw edge & needle turn)
Using boro-inspired stitching for texture and repair
Adding depth with slow hand-quilted stitches
📌 Part 2 will be released next week, where I’ll demonstrate a stitch and slash ‘chenille’ technique and share ideas for decorative quilted stitching that create a 3D effect.
✨ For further learning, check out my video: Mastering Needle Turn Appliqué – Tips for Common Problems. https://youtu.be/4LJwVmh08GA
