Mating Behaviour of Yellow Spotted Longhorned Beetle in Closeup

Two pairs of Yellow Spotted Longicorn Beetles (Psacothea hilaris hilaris, family Cerambycidae) mating on the trunk of a Mulberry tree (Morus bombycis, family Moraceae). Meanwhile, the female single-mindedly kept biting on the bark painstakingly to prepare for oviposition inside the host wood. After mating, the male stayed behind her to guard the female against bachelor males (post-copulatory mate-guarding). Captured at dusk of late-October 2019 in Japan. In this species, a mating male is known to remove the rival sperms of previous males by use of his penis during the first stage of insertion.
