How To Clean & Maintain Your RV Water Heater
How to Clean/Flush an Atwood, 6-Gallon Water Heater. Info below:
Tools you may need:
- Camco Drain Plug Removal Kit: http://amzn.to/1v9OIHZ
- RV Water Heater Spray Wand: http://amzn.to/ST0KY8
Note that I did not use a spray wand. I used water pressure to flush out the tank as suggested in the tank manual. That said, the wand is a good idea and I'll be purchasing one for next time.
I've heard of people running white vinegar through their hot water tank as vinegar dissolves lime and calcium. I'm sure it works, however I'd be a little concerned that the acid in the vinegar might compromise seals in the water system - especially if heated.
I think the method I used will clean 95% of the lime/calcium/scale deposits and that works for me.
------
The water heater in your Recreation Vehicle, 5th Wheel, or Travel Trailer needs to be cleaned periodically. Campground hard water creates an accumulation of lime, calcium, and scale deposits that need to be periodically flushed out of your water heater. Otherwise these deposits eat away at the inside of the WH shortening it's life, and can also get into your RV's water lines causing clogs and other annoying issues.
Answers to FAQs
- We've been living in the RV for 2 years full-time at the time of this video
- Yes, this is the first time I've cleaned our RVs water heater
- It should be cleaned every 6 months or so - especially if you're in a known, hard water area.
- No, RV Water Filtration Systems do not remove lime/calcium/scale. Hard water deposits are in solution with the water, so they can't be filtered.
- A water softener system: http://amzn.to/1lhhSNE - will remove most of the hard water and results in a much cleaner hot water heater. It's still a good idea to periodically flush your heater, but water softeners remove most of the lime/calcium deposits.
