She Was Rejected from Med School with a 518 MCAT Score | Application Renovation Ep. 5

Why would you get rejected from medical school even with a 518 MCAT score? Today I go through a full application of a student who had that exact thing happen. Even with good stats, other weaknesses in your application can hold you back. By watching this episode, you'll get a better sense of how to avoid making those mistakes yourself!

Our student this week is a 37-year old nontraditional student who was rejected from medical school last year even with a 518 MCAT score and around a 3.5 GPA. As a nontrad, she's been working full-time 5 to pay her mortgage and taking one class per quarter, still finishing her prereqs.

As our conversation reveals, one of the big weaknesses on her application is the relative lack of clinical experience. She did have about 50 hours of hospice volunteering. But it was just last minute, crammed in right before her application.

We talk about how to write about her clinical experiences and how they affect your application overall. Some students do get accepted without clinical experience, but it's a major red flag. And if you don't have much clinical experience, it's a lot harder to write your personal statement, too.

We take a close look at her personal statement. I discuss how she needs to add more reflection on why her patient interaction experiences made her want to be a physician. And I talk about how you need to structure your personal statement. That is, you shouldn't hold the actual reflection about why you want to be a physician until the last paragraph or two. If you do, the reader may lose interest before that point and stop reading!

Another big weakness in her application is her school list. She applied to mostly very competitive schools. Her good MCAT score may have opened up some doors for her, but some of the other parts of her application may not have matched what those schools wanted. She likely could have been accepted if she had applied to more medical schools.

We also talk about whether upper-division science classes will help your med school application or not. And we talk about how to write about physician shadowing in your application. (You don't need to write the specific number of hours per doctor!)

All in all, this episode was a great example of how you're not just your stats! A lack of clinical experience or a poor school list can be reasons you end up not getting accepted on your first try, too.
