ETRI shows 10x cheaper microLED Display Technology by simultaneous transfer and bonding procedure

The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) in South Korea has developed an innovative microLED display technology. Unlike conventional methods, their technology features a unique simultaneous transfer and bonding process, which flattens and stamps the display components. This integrated process significantly reduces costs, making the production ten times cheaper than traditional techniques, potentially making microLED technology more economically viable.

The microLED technology developed by ETRI uses both paste and film types of bonding materials, suitable for different sizes of LED chips. MicroLEDs, which are smaller, are used for high-resolution displays, while miniLEDs, which have larger chip sizes and pitches, are used for other applications. The research institute is working on perfecting these technologies and collaborating with major brands to bring them to market, although as a research institution, ETRI itself will not be mass-producing these displays.

The microLED displays created by ETRI are particularly suited for mobile devices, including phones and watches. These displays boast significantly higher brightness compared to OLED displays—up to 20 times brighter. This increase in brightness also implies stronger and more vibrant colors, enhancing the visual experience on mobile devices. MicroLEDs offer superior performance in terms of brightness and color quality, which are critical factors in mobile display technology.

Furthermore, ETRI's microLED technology is a solid-state solution, different from quantum dots, and integrates all three color pixels in a compact form. The research institute continues to develop and refine this technology, anticipating that microLEDs will be the future of many display applications. This advancement underscores the potential of microLEDs to become the next-generation technology in the display market, competing directly with OLEDs in terms of performance and cost-efficiency.
