The BEST Technique - How to Reverse Roll Quarter Saw (RRQS) with Hobby Hardwood Alabama
Our amazing Woodmizer LT-70 in action sawing logs to lumber. It’s fast and produces the best wood for wood working projects and our retail lumber business.
This is an advanced yet simple quarter sawing technique I developed several years ago to speed up the quarter sawing process and increase the hit ratio. This technique is unusual in that it will generally yield fleck on every board with a 100% hit ratio, no misses, and logs can be sawn faster and with less waste than traditional quartering techniques. The log in this video had zero misses and all boards had distinctive quarter sawn fleck, which is the goal.
Traditional techniques involve cutting the log into quarters, hence the name, and then sawing each quarter from there. Basically turn one log into 4 sections, each or which must them be handled and sawn and also require the Sawyer to "guess" where the best fleck on the first cut, which puts the most risk on the widest, most valuable boards. Due to this, traditional techniques only yield 70% to 80% quarter sawn fleck, which is not acceptable, are waste and take twice as long.
Using this RRQS technique, I only have to cut the log in half, align it properly, and saw down from there with the initial cuts being in the narrowest sections of the half logs, where if I miss the fleck, I can make adjustments and not ruin a wide board. As I "home in" on the fleck, I do so on the widest boards, so increase their value. This is called "Reverse Roll" because when I originally developed the technique, I found it easier to roll the log half in a reverse direction. However, with the increased hydraulic capacities of our LT-70 Super, now I can do it in either direction, whichever is more convenient.
I have discussed and demonstrated this technique for years on the web with still photos and descriptions,, even done some demos at live events, and have seen that sawyers can pick up this technique within minutes and smoke through logs, with amazing yield.
As with all quarter sawing techniques, the log must be precisely leveled and then "gun barreled" into an octagon before quarter sawing may begin. I start the video after these basic steps. At this point, three boards typically should be sawn, one above, one centered, and one below the pith. This produces three high quality boards immediately, but also removes the juvenile wood from the log halves and succeeding boards, which reduces deformation when drying.
In the video, I only had to rotate and inspect for fleck a minimum of times, because I've done this so many times that I knew the log would be predictable. However, its not unusual to inspect more boards, and make adjustments as need. If a board is out of the fleck, slight rotational or toe board adjustments are made, followed with a thin skim cut, until the proper results are seen, then start taking full thickness boards.
This RRQS technique is really this easy.
