2019 BMW X5 - The ultimate driving... SUV?

The all-new 2019 BMW X5 starts good and only gets better from there. But with a $60,700 starting price that can easily reach six figures with higher trims and options, what things should you pay for, and what’s best left off the table?

First things first, BMW’s turbocharged, straight-6 engine in the X5 is a thing of beauty. Smooth and consistent power driven to all four wheels helps the X5 sprint from zero to 60 mph in under 5.3 seconds. The ZF 8-speed automatic flawlessly the 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque, and helps the X5 reach its EPA-estimated fuel economy of 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined. If speed is your game, you can upgrade to the xDrive50i’s turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 for 456 hp and 479 lb-ft.

The new X5 is built on BMW’s Cluster Architecture platform, which also underpins the new Toyota Supra. Steering response is well-weighted and the suspension absorbs potholes well, even when the X5 is fitted with 20-inch run-flat tires.

The trunk is easily accessible, particularly with the X5’s optional adjustable air-suspension, but the leather upholstery gets hot fast, and ventilated seats aren’t standard equipment. Likewise, the iDrive infotainment system is good, but not as good as the systems BMW’s competition has been releasing.
