My five-year-old drew a picture of me — with a red X over my face. Then he told me I wasn't his real daddy.
It started as a crayon drawing his teacher flagged at school. A stick figure. Our kitchen. A red X where my face should be. I laughed it off. Kids have wild imaginations. But that night he screamed in his sleep, saying "the other daddy is still downstairs." Our dog wouldn't come near me. And the next morning, my son looked me dead in the eyes and said my real self never comes home after 11 PM.
I checked my records. He was right. I have no memory of coming home at 11:47 that night.
The drawing is still on the refrigerator. The X gets darker every day.
