Jason Arday Investigator Exposes Academic Culture | David Sanders

Professor David A. Sanders, who examined evidence in the Jason Arday case, explains how flawed research can remain in the academic literature even when experts in the field know there are serious problems.

Sanders describes discovering what he calls a kind of “secret knowledge” within academia — papers that insiders know are wrong, while outsiders have no way of knowing. He explains how this led him into investigating research misconduct, plagiarism, image manipulation and failures by journals and universities to correct the scientific record.

From a high-profile Science paper that took 15 years to retract to a research misconduct case that reached the front page of The New York Times, Sanders argues that the deeper problem is not simply individual researchers, but the institutions responsible for maintaining academic standards.

This segment is from my full conversation with Professor David A. Sanders on research integrity, academic misconduct and the Jason Arday controversy.
