“A Ship’s Anchor Chain Can Weigh as Much as a Blue Whale”. #documentary#usashorts#fyp

The incredible force that stops a massive ship isn't just its anchor—it’s a carefully engineered system of immense weight and friction. When the anchor is released, its flukes are designed to dig into the seabed, but that’s only the beginning.

The true stopping power comes from the anchor chain. A single link can weigh as much as a refrigerator, and the entire length deployed can equal the weight of a blue whale. As the ship drifts back, this massive chain piles onto the seafloor. Laying across the bottom, it creates enormous drag, acting like a giant, heavy brake shoe for the vessel.

This process isn't instant. From the moment the anchor is dropped, it takes a full 3–4 minutes of controlled drifting for the chain to settle and for the combined force of the buried anchor and the chain’s drag to overcome the momentum of a ship powered by tens of thousands of horsepower.
