Nordic Folklore: Fossegrimen - The Bard of Mythological Creatures

Fossegrims (also known as fossekallen) are creatures living in waterfalls and said to be incredibly talented at playing the violin.

According to Nordic folklore, a fossegrim can be willing to teach away his skills in exchange for a food offering, making the violinist able to play so well that the trees will dance and the water will stand still in their torrents. Several famous Norwegian fiddlers are said to have gotten their talents from the fossekall, most notably Myllargutten and Ole Bull. Norway's national bird, the white-throated dipper is also called fossekallen in Norwegian, possibly named after the mythological creature.
