Marilyn Manson - Live at the Civic Auditorium Santa Monica, CA (1997)

As part of the 'Dead to the Word' tour, Marilyn Manson delivers a blistering 17 song set at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica, CA.

Marilyn Manson is known for their bombastic and controversial stage theatrics as well as for putting together a massive production.

During the Dead to the World tour, the background was a church vitral of Jesus, accompanied by a set of long stairs from which Manson walked down in order to perform the opening piece, "Angel with the Scabbed Wings".

Self-mutilation was a recurring element. For "Man That You Fear" the microphone was covered with white flowers. There was also a snow- or ash-like effect used mostly for "Cake and Sodomy" and "Cryptorchid".

During performances of the album's title song, the stage would be transformed into a mock fascist rally replete with a podium and oversized banners decorated with the Antichrist Superstar logo. Confetti was dropped from the ceiling while Manson ripped the pages off a bible. The band played while wearing chromed stahlhelms.

In his autobiography The Long Hard Road Out of Hell, Manson described the performance as simultaneously both social commentary and self-critique meant to highlight how little difference there was between celebrity and demagoguery.
