In his view, every communicative event comprises three dimensions.
1. Firstly, it is a text (speech, writing, visual images, or a combination of these).
2. Secondly, it is a discursive practice which involves the production and consumption of texts.
3. Thirdly, it is a social practice.

Corresponding to the three levels of discourse, Fairclough developed three stages of CDA: description, interpretation, and explanation.
