जहां r बिन्दु O के सापेक्ष बल F की क्रियारेखा पर स्थित किसी बिन्दु का स्थिति सदिश (position vector) है। मोटे तौर पर बलाघूर्ण का अर्थ किसी वस्तु (बोल्ट या फ्लाईव्हील) पर लगने वाला 'घूर्नन बल' (घुमाने वाला बल) होता है। उदाहरण के लिये जब किसी पाने (रिंच) के हैंडिल को खींचते या धक्का देते हैं तो इससे एक बलाघूर्ण उत्पन्न होता है जो नट या बोल्ट को ढीला करता है या कसता है।
