Dr. Gavin Wood explains Polkadot as a means of facilitating blockchain experimentation and a vehicle for bringing blockchain innovation closer to production.

Polkadot is a heterogenous, multi-chain system. Heterogenous in that the nature of the blockchains (how the store, what they store, how they're executed, etc.) is entirely flexible. Polkadot makes no assumptions about their structure. They don't even have to be blockchains, they just have to fulfill a couple of criteria. All of these chains, or whatever they may be, can exchange messages (or value) in a trust-free fashion.
