Unraveling the Mysteries of Superconductors w/ Dr. Ming Yi

Title: Unraveling the Mysteries of Superconductors

Abstract: The accidental discovery of the phenomenon of superconductivity by Kamerlingh Onnes in 1911 is arguably one of the most interesting events of condensed matter physics. Not only do superconductors have super-powers that give them great potential for game-changing applications for our society, decades of research have also revealed that at the fundamental level, the electrons responsible for superconductivity organize themselves in beautiful and mysterious ways that spell out symmetries of the universe, making them one of the most exciting and challenging problems to study for condensed matter physicists. As it turns out, superconductivity belongs to a class of phenomena collectively known as “emergent phenomena”, where patterns and properties appear not due to the characteristics of the individual constituents of the material but rather from the constituents’ collective interactions. In this seminar, I will first introduce the macroscopic properties that identify materials as superconductors and discuss the potential for applications, then discuss some of the very active experimental techniques for studying superconductors at the fundamental level, and finally talk about some of the interesting ways electrons organize themselves to cause superconductivity.
