Sheep Shearing on our Smallholding Homestead

The weather has got very warm and the sheep need shearing. So with the shearer in the area, we arranged to get our small flock sheared.

Hot work, so I'm pleased that I'm not doing it......
Our flock consists of 14 ewes, they are cross between Suffolk and Welsh Mountain Mule. 11 are approximately 6 years old and 3 are 3 years old. The older ones have had 3 years of lambing.
They are mainly fed on grass throughout the summer and hay and pellets during the winter months. However, we also supplement their food with a Colbalt and Selenium drench administered orally every month. Without this supplement they cannot produce vitamin B12 and will starve (to death) even though there is an abundance of grass. We found this out the hard way a couple seasons back before realising that the grass was deficient in these vital elements.
Every month we handle them for drenching and also check for flystrike, and check for feet problems. As a result they are a very tame flock that usually come running towards us, especially if we have a bucket of ewe nuts with us.
