What They DIDN'T TELL YOU About How This Irrigation Locator Actually Works!

So how the heck does a Wire & Valve Locator work? If you're an electrician, contractor, irrigation specialist, or if you just work in construction...listen up!

You have a red lead hooked up to a wire and a black lead to a ground stake. And whatever charge is on the wire, positive or negative, the opposite charge will be in the dirt collecting right outside the wire: because Opposites Attract.
If you keep flipping back and forth between positive and negative, we can pick that up with an antenna. But these charges really rely on the dirt around the wire. So if the cable isn't buried, your signal really suffers. The longer your cable is and the more it's buried, the stronger your signal can get. But if we complete a circuit at the end of our wire into the dirt, even though this is a short wire above the ground, we've got a much stronger signal because it can flow all the way to the end of our wire, back through the dirt, to the ground stake.
