Wild Swimming

The mammalian dive reflex is a fascinating physiological response that occurs in all mammals, including humans, when the face is submerged in water. It is triggered by the cold water and pressure on the face and is designed to help mammals conserve oxygen and redirect blood flow to the most important organs when underwater.
One of the most interesting aspects of the mammalian dive reflex is that it is present in all mammals, indicating that it has been an essential adaptation for millions of years. It helps mammals to stay underwater for long periods, foraging for food and avoiding predators. While it is more pronounced in aquatic mammals, humans can also trigger the response by immersing their face in cold water or holding their breath while underwater.
The mammalian dive reflex works by slowing down the heart rate, constricting the blood vessels in the extremities, and redirecting blood flow to the most important organs. This helps to conserve oxygen and ensure that the vital organs have enough oxygen to function correctly. Additionally, the mammalian dive reflex causes the spleen to contract and release more red blood cells into the bloodstream, which increases the body's ability to carry oxygen.
