Frankie Bones Part 4 | Omar Santana, Biz Markie, Egyptian Lover | The Birth of Bones Breaks!
Billy Daniel Bunter and Frankie Bones continue their incredible journey through the true history of underground dance music in part 4 of this legendary Rave Story TV interview.
This episode dives deep into Frankie’s relationship with Omar Santana. Frankie openly says he would not be where he is today without Omar Santana and explains how heavily inspired he was by Omar’s edits, productions and underground style.
This becomes a real history lesson on editing, sampling and making music in New York during the mid-80s, long before modern computers, plug-ins and home studios existed.
Frankie paints a vivid picture of the studios, emulator samplers, reel-to-reel editing and the incredible costs involved in making music at the time. Thousands of pounds worth of equipment, expensive studio sessions and endless experimentation created the foundations of rave music as we know it today.
The episode also features two incredible Biz Markie stories, including how Biz took inspiration for Nobody Beats The Biz from the electrical store Frankie worked in called Nobody Beats The Wiz, plus the story of an unreleased early recording Frankie made with Biz before the rapper was signed.
Billy and Frankie then go deep into the legendary Bones Breaks label, one of the most important labels in the evolution of breakbeat hardcore, jungle and rave culture.
Frankie explains how the first release barely moved, but by the second release, London and the UK rave scene had discovered the label and suddenly Bones Breaks exploded as it collided with the ecstasy-fuelled warehouse rave movement happening across Britain in the late 80s.
One of the most fascinating conversations centres around the legendary Street Sounds Electro albums, which were released in England using American music but were then imported back into New York and became hugely influential to Frankie Bones and Omar Santana themselves.
The conversation leaves Daniel fascinated by the idea that England often understood and celebrated underground American dance music more deeply than America itself at the time.
Frankie and Daniel also pay huge respect to Egyptian Lover and discuss his authenticity and influence across almost five decades of underground music culture.
Frankie also speaks honestly about his disappointment that modern EDM culture has drifted away from its original rave roots and spirit over the years, while also explaining how England made him fully realise the power and importance of breakbeats within dance music culture.
This is essential listening for anyone who truly wants to understand the roots of hardcore, rave, jungle and underground dance music.
