Ask Augustin 8 - Slides and Shifts

In this installment I talk about different kinds of slides, and how slides are different from shifts. The main difference for me is that slides are intentional and serve a musical purpose. A shift on the other hand is just about moving to a different position, and shifting sounds are unintentional noises when the shifts are not clean. Sometimes it's easy to not even notice how musically distracting shifting sounds between notes can be, because we become used to them. (In the video I demonstrate two particularly horrible examples of bothersome shifting sounds, just to drive home the point).

Sliding should always have an expressive musical purpose, and knowing many different ways to slide at different speeds and intensities and with the "departure" finger or with the "arrival" finger or a combination of both will give you a lot of expressive tools.
I stay away from terms like "french slide" and "russian slide" since I find they are not so helpful - I just choose how to slide based on the musical context.
