Frosty Hesson is a veteran big-wave surfer, who started surfing Mavericks in the early ’90s. He was also a youth surf coach and took Jay Moriarty’s under his wing when Jay asked Frosty to help him get ready to surf Mavericks. Jay grew up to become an iconic big wave surfer known for his fluent style, friendly character, positive attitude, and stoke. His tragic passing (during a solo freedive in the Maldives) shocked the surfing community. His spirit lives on in the “Life Like Jay” motto, the “Jay Moriarity foundation” foundation, and the “Jay Race” annual paddleboard race in Santa Cruz in his memory.
