Do astronauts ever get depressed in space?
Astronauts are taken with a common rapid shift in mindset called the Overview Effect. When you see the earth, and you see it without borders and against the all-consuming black emptiness of the void, you realize that we’re all in this together, in a much more real sense than one thought possible. Realizing that these revelations can and will fall on deaf ears can be depressing.

Isolation is a more immediate and realistic cause for concern. Studies and anecdotal evidence shows that prisoners kept in isolation suffer from depression along with a number of other extremely damaging psychological issues including vivid, horrifying visual and auditory hallucinations, thoughts of self-harm, and eventually a complete break with reality. And truth be told, I’m not sure enough research has gone into the minimum requirements to keep people lucid, engaged, and sane long-term.

This is one of the reasons I stress that colonies and spacecraft will have to be more luxurious than we’re currently making them. Nobody wants to live in a laboratory for the rest of their lives.
