One of the most trenchant observers of modern democracy, Masha Gessen is a journalist, activist and bestselling author of the award-winning "The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia." Gessen has covered political subjects from Russia, autocracy, LGBTQ rights, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump, among others, and their understanding of the events and forces that are wracking Ukraine is unparalleled. A staff writer for The New Yorker, they are also a regular contributor to The New York Times, The Washington Post, Harper’s, The New York Review of Books, Vanity Fair, Slate, and others. Gessen is the recipient of numerous awards, including Guggenheim and Carnegie fellowships, and teaches at Bard College in New York City. Their most recent book is “Surviving Autocracy.”
