1. Capital C and Small c

Capital C (Big C): C Used at the start of a sentence or for names. Examples:

Cat is my pet.
Cindy likes candy.

Small c (Little c): c Used in the middle or end of words. Examples:

I see a cat.
The cake is sweet.

Practice: C C C c c c

Say: C is for cat.

2. Pronunciation of Letter C

The letter C has two common sounds:

Main sound (Hard C): /k/

Like the sound in cat, car, cake.
This is the most common sound for C.

Mouth Position for /k/ sound:

Open your mouth a little.
Touch the back of your tongue to the roof of your mouth.
Push air out quickly (no voice – your throat does not vibrate).
It is a quick, unvoiced sound.

Words to practice (Hard C /k/): cat, car, cake, cow, cup, corn, candy, cold, coat, cry

Simple sentences:

The cat is on the car.
I like cake and candy.
The cow is cold.

Soft C sound: /s/ (We will learn this more later)

Like in city, ice, nice.

Practice Tip: Put your hand on your throat. Say “k-k-k-k”. You should feel no vibration. Compare: “c” (cat – no voice) vs “g” (go – with voice).
