Maji [Water]
Local Kenyan, Patrick Kilonzo Mwalua now known as "The Water Man", has made it his mission over the last 13 years to protect and help the animals in Kenya’s Tsavo National Park. In 2005, Kenya experienced one of the worst droughts in its history which resulted in the deaths of many animals, either from dehydration or from wandering outside the boundaries of Tsavo National Park and being poisoned or killed by local farmers trying to protect their crops and land.
After witnessing this, Patrick had a new mission to protect and help the animals of the Tsavo get access to the most natural resource in the world, water. Since then, with the help of his supporters all over the world, he has built 15 dams, numerous watering holes, and was able to purchase a water truck that has greatly improved his ability to help the animals thrive. He is also currently building a large holding tank to store water in the event there is another drought.
Patrick’s fight to keep the animals alive is not the only battle he is fighting. Four years ago, Patrick was diagnosed with kidney failure and since that time has been on dialysis twice a week. He is the sole supporter of his family, which includes a wife and two small daughters, and thus, cannot afford to pay for a kidney transplant. Through all of his struggles though, Patrick has maintained a positive attitude and he continues to do everything he can to help the amazing creatures of Tsavo National Park live another day.
Patrick believes that with continued support, he can help even more animals in the park, because he has no doubt that water is life.
