Interview with Eric Disrude

A while ago we had the pleasure of conducting an interview with Dream Theater's (and Mike Mangini's) Drum Tech - Eric Disrude.

The audio wasnt the best, so I apologize in advance. The questions the interviewer asked were as follows:

Interview with Eric Disrude

Saturday April 22nd 2017 at Cardiff Motorpoint Arena

1. Welcome back to the UK and Europe!

2. How are things going so far on this leg?

3. The last European leg ended at the end of February…did any of the backline gear stay in the UK? Can you give us an idea of how it works?

4. Was this kit created new for the Astonishing tour?

5. You’ve had a few weeks between legs, were there any tech or band rehearsals prior to the first show on this leg in Birmingham?

6. Did you do any other tech work between these two legs?

7. Most of the rest of this year will be on the Images, Words and Beyond tour with DT but some time-off in the summer.- do you have any plans for the summer break?

8. One thing that always fascinates me is how much notice you crew guys are given for your availability on a tour?

9. There are even one-off requirements like video shoots for a band like DT, do you set up the kits for that type of job?

10. Were you involved in the building of the first MM kit for DT - the grey finish kit, built at the Pearl factory?

11. For those not familiar, I believe that your DT history goes back around 15 years (Italy 2002?) - does it seem as long as that to you?!

12. Since you started with the band, you’ve only missed a couple of tour legs - otherwise, you’ve done every tour?

13. With MP’s departure in 2010, you were the obvious choice for MM. Can you give us an idea of how all that came together?

14. Had you met MM prior to him joining DT?

15. We already mentioned the very original MM DT kit, which was quite different to the current kit?

16. Are there any electronics on this kit?

17. How many full kits exist worldwide for MM?

18. I think I remember seeing a red sparkle finish kit which Pearl built for one of the NAMM shows (around 2013?)

19. This kit has aquired a lof of sound deflecting Perspex panels - they almost go unnoticed as they are so CLEAN!

20. On the topic of heads, can you give us a quick summary of how often they’re changed?

21. MM is using a slightly thicker snare head now?

22. Bass drum heads last a while?

23. On thing on this kit is the “cannon toms” mounted high-up - the heads are VERY tightly tuned..?

24. What spares do you have on the riser if anything breaks?

25. You’ve done many festivals with both MP and MM - have they got any easier? Rolling risers make a huge difference…

26. After each show the kit is taken completely apart, but some bands can travel leaving the kit set up in the back of the truck?!

27. Can you give us an idea of setup time on a good day?

28. Is it your job to ensure all of the cases get loaded into the trucks, or is that the Production Manager?

29. MM’s new “Wicked Piston” are amazing. The logic of the weight transfer depending on where you hold the stick, makes so much sense…

30. Can you tell us if “Drumlandia” still exists?

31.You were official President too!
32. Another big interest of yours is golf - do you get much chance to play when out on tour?

33. You, MM and John Myung all play - have you got any other band members into golf too?

34.I believe KK Downing who used to be with Judas Priest has his own course and club in the UK…somewhere in the Midlands?
Thanks to Al Muirden for his interview.
