Problem solved! How to stop cats using your garden soil as a toilet, without using chemicals!
Cat Poop is no fun in your garden, but you can win the 'battle of the poo'.
Roger shows us how he has successfully encouraged cats to go somewhere else to leave their smelly deposits.
This does not require use of any chemicals, quite simply you can use plants to deter cats .. and Roger shows us how easy it can be in just a few minutes in a 'cat friendly' way.
Perseverance is a key to success in this battle - there is no overnight cure, but a combination of the factors explained in this video can help, such as
- Understanding the psychology and habits of cats - they love to return to their scent and make another deposit, so by removing the source of their smell (ie remove their poo) and putting it somewhere else - I use a rough unused patch of ground right at the end of our garden, which encourages them to go down there rather than on my garden. (Some valued viewers of this video have suggested taking the poo pack to the cat owners garden and leaving it there! I couldn't possibly comment on this idea!)
- Cover their scent - put another strong (more pleasant) smell in the area where they had left their scent to confuse their highly sensitive sense of smell. There are several smelly cat repellents available in garden centres etc but in this video we use the Scaredy cat plant (Coleus Caninia) to provide the covering smell. It may also be worth adding some of your alternative covering smell (e.g some crushed leaves of the Scaredy cat plant) to their most used pathways to your garden as they will have left their scent here too, and that way you can confuse them even before they get to your garden!
- adding a prickly mulch to your soil surface, we use cut up short lengths of very thorny rose stems, once the cat has tip toed over them once they may not try again!
Repeat the above as necessary, I find that it can take a few weeks to change the cats habits ... and then it becomes some else's problem - and you can sit back and sniff the roses!
Let us know how you get on - good luck!
