Disability: Oppression, Empowerment, and All That’s In Between | Khansa Maria | TEDxYouth@DPSMIS
If we were to go with convention, disabled people are either viewed as the pinnacle of inspiration or a burden to get rid of. Meet Khansa Maria. She's not here to be your inspiration. She is, however, here to change your perception on disability. Khansa is a sophomore at Georgetown University, Qatar with a burning interest in alleviating the stigmas surrounding this issue of disability. She is also visually challenged; therefore, she has first-hand knowledge of these stereotypes and their negative effects on the disabled community. In 2016, she founded Hope for Tomorrow, which is an organization that aims to combat the stigmas surrounding disabilities in order to bridge the gap between the disabled and the able-bodied. With hilarious encounters she’s had with individuals to personal stories of her life, Maria carefully deconstructs society’s almost cemented perceptions of the disabled.
