Toward a Comparative Theology: Faith Seeking Understanding across Religious Borders

This Seminar is part of the Peter Craigie Memorial Lectures and Seminar for 2020-2021.

Dr. Francis X. Clooney gives a seminar on Theology is often conceived of as an inward-looking discipline, concerned with the scriptures and traditions, ideas and experiences and practices of one’s own faith only, while religious studies takes up the broader array of traditions in all their features, without any necessary introspective glance at faith or practice in a home tradition. Comparative theology contests this dichotomy, by insisting that theology grounded in one tradition can take up the work of faith seeking understanding interreligiously, for the sake of a learning deepened and transformed through encounter with the scriptures and traditions, ideas and experiences and practices of one or more other traditions as well. The discipline thus stands between theology and religious studies, stretching the resources and contesting the intentions of both.
