Understanding HB209 and how it affects the citizenship verification process

During the most recent legislative session, I worked closely with Representative Cory Maloy to help advance HB209, a bill that now requires election officials in Utah to verify the citizenship status of registered voters. HB209 also authorizes the use of the federal Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) program, operated by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, to carry out that verification.

I was the first election officer in Utah to complete the registration process for SAVE, and it has already proven to be a valuable tool for fulfilling the responsibilities outlined in the new law. In this video, I explain how the program works, why HB209 matters for election administration, and how these tools support accuracy and accountability in our voter‑registration system.
