We summarize Prof. Alison Gopnik's #ACL2023nlp keynote. She was making the point that Large Language Models (LLMs) are not to be regarded as intelligent agents, but rather as cultural technologies.
Clarification on intelligence: As I understood from the talk, intelligence is this one scale that measures things, but it is useless to describe reality: cognitive systems have multiple capacities, so many dimensions and scales across which we should measure, not just one which we could call intelligence. These capacities can even go one against each other, meaning that if you optimise on one dimension, you lose on the other (originality vs. imitation).
So, some cognitive capacities of ChatGPT can exceed human capabilities (for example memory par excellence), but in other capacities, ChatGPT does not even reach a child's capacity (for this she gave examples of causal generalization tests).
