Day 44 | Introduction to GitHub Actions #100daysofdevops #github #githubactions #ci #cicd
After spending the previous days working with Jenkins and building a full CI pipeline around my project, today’s focus was to understand what GitHub Actions is, why it is so popular, and how it compares to Jenkins.
This was not a hands-on build day yet.
It was a concept and foundation day, because before writing workflows, I wanted to make sure the structure and key ideas were clear.
In this video, I covered:
____________________________________________________
why CI/CD sits at the core of DevOps
why this phase is currently focused on Continuous Integration
the two CI tools being covered in this journey:
Jenkins
GitHub Actions
why GitHub Actions is considered one of the most convenient CI tools today
how GitHub Actions differs from Jenkins
why GitHub Actions feels simpler when your code already lives in GitHub
why Jenkins is still powerful because it can integrate with different source control platforms
how GitHub Actions is more GitHub-native, while Jenkins is more tool-agnostic
I also introduced the two important places you need to know when working with GitHub Actions:
GitHub Actions Documentation
GitHub Marketplace
And I explained why the marketplace is so useful:
instead of writing everything from scratch, many common workflow steps already exist as reusable actions.
I also broke down some key GitHub Actions concepts and compared them with Jenkins so it becomes easier to understand:
Workflow → similar to a Jenkinsfile
Job → similar concept in Jenkins
Runner → similar to an agent
Secrets/Variables → similar to stored credentials in Jenkins
Triggers → the native GitHub Actions equivalent of what webhooks helped us do with Jenkins
One of the biggest lessons from today was this:
The concepts in CI tools are often the same. What usually changes is the naming and the way the platform presents them.
This video sets the foundation for the hands-on GitHub Actions workflow that starts next.
