Realpolitik & Narva | State of Emergency in Estonia - Day 23 (Coronavirus & COVID-19)

April 4th 2020. Day 23 of Estonia's State of Emergency.

The current government when it was formed about a year ago didn't really imagine that they would be facing a crises with a global scope that would both put the lives of a lot of citizens in danger as well as start totally disrupting the economy. And if you keep in mind that part of the new coalition is EKRE, the local neoconservative populist party with far-right tendencies who dind't have experience in governing, then a lot of people were understandably nervous how this thing will be handled.

Well, so far the common understanding is that the government in Estonia is doing a pretty okay job. There hasn't been a serious explosion in the new cases, the restrictions in place seem to be keeping the COVID-19 spread fairly at bay and they are working on finding aid measures to help companies that are affected the most by what's going on.

At the same time it seems like some of the initiatives of the government seem to be carrying the badge of EKRE scoring some political points for their supporters. Their anti-immigration mentality is well-known, but this does pose the question that a lof people are asking in different countries - what will be the new normality once this thing is over? Will there be more international cooperation or will societies try to hide themselves in their own caves?

To ponder about these political dilemmas I drove to Narva, the city on the EU border where you can see Russia on the other bank of Narva river. Where else to ask the questions that we're going to face in the future than in Narva, that has one of the most complicated past in any of Estonian cities? Also I had a Skype call with my good friend Mihkel Kaevats, a poet and an activist on the political front to get his insight about the status quo. And I was curious what was his take on what has happened in Italy since he has a past of his own there.
