St Albans is a historic cathedral city in Hertfordshire, England, located about 20 miles north-west of central London.

The city is named after Alban, a Roman citizen who lived in the ancient city of Verulamium. In the 3rd or 4th century, he sheltered a Christian priest and was executed by the Romans, becoming the first Christian martyr in Britain.

St Albans Cathedral was built on the site of his burial, and the modern city eventually grew around this cathedral.

Before the city received its current name, it was called Verulamium.

This name is believed to be of Celtic origin, meaning "settlement above the marsh" or "above the river."
