The Road to Becoming a Professional Golfer

Damien Hewitt is a 20-year-old amateur golfer, following his dream to make the elite level. The chances are slim in the modern era as 2011 Open Championship winner, Darren Clarke (see interview transcription below) reveals, but he has proved already in his young life that he can overcome any obstacle to succeed.

-------------------

Interview with Darren Clarke:

"The standard of golf has improved dramatically over the last 20 years. Due to more people playing the game at a very high level, from many more countries all over the world, the extra competition has resulted in an increase in the standard to make it as a successful tournament pro.

"Physical fitness also plays a much more important part in the game and many many more professionals spend time working out in the gym to ensure the longevity of their career by making sure all the correct muscle groups are kept in good order. Back in the day, it was the bar and not the gym!

"Technology has also made a massive difference in the clubs, shafts, and balls we use. The general ethic is still the same, work hard and if you have the talent you should succeed."
