Best 72 Hours in Russia

Visiting Russia WITHOUT A VISA for 72 hours made for a whirlwind adventure around the historic city of St. Petersburg. We crammed in tons of sightseeing (and eating!) and tried our very best to absorb as much Russian culture as possible. This video is our final day in Russia before our visa free time expires and we have to leave. We get an early start and head to the Peter and Paul Fortress, which is the birthplace of St. Petersburg. It's an island where Peter the Great first established the city and now it's home to museums, monuments, and the Peter and Paul Cathedral. The gold-coloured cathedral has a tall, thin spire that stretches high into the sky and is visible from afar. Inside you find the tombs of nearly every single Russian royal, including Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. The interior is pastel pink and green with huge swaths of gold. There's a great view of St. Petersburg's city centre from the island so we stop to take it in before walking across the bridge to the Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood. With signature onion-shaped domes and bright colours, its architecture has a uniquely Russian feel. But it's the interior here that's the real showstopper: 7500 square metres of mosaic tiles! Reportedly the largest collection in the world, you can try to imagine the time and focus to place each one. This church gets its name from being built over the exact place where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in 1881. His son built it in his honour and there's a canopy inside on top of the original cobblestone street where his father was killed. Be aware that this beautiful site is also the top area for pickpockets in St. Petersburg.
