What is normal body temperature?
Body temperature is one of the four main vital signs that doctors will use to determine how you’re doing. Normal body temperature is 98.6° F but this can vary significantly based on things such as age, gender, what time of day you measure your temperature, or even where on your body you measure it—for instance checking on your forehead as opposed to checking under your tongue.
When should I see a doctor about my temperature?
A body temperature higher than 98.6° F may not necessarily be a bad thing. What it usually means is that your body’s immune system is activated to fight an infection. If your body temperature is above 103° F, does not improve when taking fever reducers like Tylenol or Advil, or is associated with severe symptoms, it’s worth seeing a doctor to discuss.
Low body temperature can also be a problem. Oftentimes a low body temperature is also the result of your body fighting an infection. However, if your body temperature falls below 96° F it’s worth seeing a doctor. Below this temperature your organs can have trouble functioning normally.
If you have a fever, download the K Health app. There you can learn about how people like you were diagnosed and treated. You can also chat in real time with one of our board-certified physicians who can help you figure out why your temperature is too high or too low.
