Every Computer File System Explained in 8 Minutes

Every System of Computer Files Explained

This video explains what a file system is and why it matters. It is the rulebook a computer follows to name, store, and retrieve files on a disk. Starting from the earliest solution, FAT, built in 1977 to track files on floppy disks using a central allocation table, the script moves forward through Microsoft's NTFS, which introduced journaling, security permissions, and a Master File Table to replace FAT for professional use. It then covers exFAT, which was designed specifically to solve the one practical limitation FAT32 left behind, the 4GB file size ceiling, while remaining compatible across Windows, macOS, and consumer electronics like cameras and SD cards.

From there, the script shifts to more advanced, modern file systems. BTRFS introduced copy-on-write architecture and snapshot support for Linux environments where data integrity during crashes is critical. HFS+ was Apple's answer to tight OS integration, rich metadata handling, and reliable journaling across every Mac and iPhone for nearly two decades. Finally, EXT4 is presented as the most widely deployed file system in the world today, powering Android devices, Linux servers, and the majority of cloud infrastructure, making it the quiet backbone of the modern internet. Together, the six systems are arranged from simplest to most sophisticated, showing how each one emerged to solve a problem the previous generation could not handle.
