Did you know that the concept of 'open source' actually has its root in IBM ? In 1959, IBM's Share User Group, which was a volunteer-run user group dedicated to IBM mainframe computers, and founded by the Los Angeles-area users of IBM computers,
released the source code of the SHARE Operating System, an OS which was to be used in IBM 709 computers.

A major resource of the SHARE group was the SHARE library. It was Originally, distributed by IBM, with what software they provided in source form, but IBM also allowed users to make small local additions or modifications, and then exchange them with other users.

SHARE Operating System was one of the first example of "commons-based peer production" which is now widely used in the development of free and open-source software
such as GNU/Linux project.

This pioneering move laid the foundation for the open-source philosophy which we highly embrace today.
