Lakeside Show Prep 2018 - AC Road Maintainer

Newly restored Allis-Chalmers Road Maintainer.

In the days of many dirt and gravel roads, every town had a road grader, commonly called a Road Maintainer, Motor Patrol, or simply Patrol. These were frequently smaller than a construction grader.

Originally, maintainers would be horse drawn, later pulled by a tractor, with an operator standing in the center of an array of manual handwheels and cranks. Later came an adaptation of a regular farm tractor, like the orange one seen here, still retaining the manual handwheels, and finally a purpose built machine with power controls.

Given the very wide turning radius, the loader is special purpose. The scarifier and grader blade would be used to loosen and windrow road material to be reclaimed. The loader would then scoop up the loose material, and the machine was driven straight back to dump the material over the tailgate of a dump truck following behind in reverse.

The quality of this restoration is typical of the partnership between Lakeside and the Harry Young Chapter, HCEA.

A retired mechanic from Marks Tractor was visiting, so they set up an AC dealer display.

The red Ford truck has been around for a while, but suddenly a welder and other service equipment appeared on the bed, and it is now the club's service truck. Lakeside has a very large modern service truck that can be used for big jobs.
