Grand Seiko watches are versatile, enduringly attractive, and well made; the Grand Seiko Spring Drive GMT SBGE271 is a prime example of what makes Seiko’s premier watch brand so appealing. At 40.2mm in stainless steel, the SBGE271 is an all-around choice for watch collectors who favor a 20th-century vintage aesthetic with modern dial graphics and 21st century timekeeping technology.

Launched as part of the 2021 Grand Seiko “season” series, the SBGE271 celebrates Kanro, the micro season – “sekki”—that represents autumn. Artisans in the company’s design department crafted a dial that mimics the look of an autumn sky at night. The dial base is a gloss black with brushed metal swirls representing clouds under bright moon. Golden details on the dial pair with the rose gold 24-hour GMT hand to recall the glow of a fall moon.

Internally, this Spring Drive GMT is powered by caliber 9R66, an automatic movement with 72 hours of power reserve. Hacking seconds, dual time zones, a date window, a power reserve indicator, and a 72-hour power reserve are features of the 9R66. Because Seiko Spring Drive fuses mechanical and quartz timekeeping technology, this watch can remain accurate to +/- 15 seconds per month despite the absence of batteries, capacitors, and motors. All of the kinetic energy in the movement is provided by the discharge of the mainspring.

Additional artistry is lavished on the case of this Grand Seiko GMT. The stainless steel exterior reflects expert application of “Zaratsu” polishing. This technique, which results in a mirror-like shine, is the result of holding the raw watch case against a spinning tin plate. Artisans practice for up to three years to master this craft, and it ensures that each Grand Seiko SBGE271 is a true hand-finished luxury watch. Although the style of the 271 is inspired by Grand Seiko watches of the 1960s, the GMT achieves a modern water resistance rating of 100 meters.
